How to Be a Parent to a Teenager

Parenting a teen can be stressful. This is a hard time for any child as they learn to stand on their own two feet. However, increased independence can mean increased tension in the home as well. Trying to remain objective and not take your teen’s anxiety during this phase personally can be challenging.

Parenting a teen requires unique skills you did not need to use when your child was younger. Access to these skills can make the parenting process more manageable and reduce conflict with your teen daily.

Tips for Parenting a Teen

1. Remember That You Need to be A Friend Sometimes

Teens are often overwhelmed with things going on in their lives as they turn into adults. While you need to maintain fair rules in your house and provide guidance, you must also be sure to listen to your child and support them when they need it. Being friendly and supportive toward your teen is just as important as being a leader and taking care of other tough parenting roles.

Your teen will feel more comfortable talking to you if you can listen without judgment, and they will be able to bring their worries and concerns to you as well. This is often the best way to help mitigate conflict with your teen and to help keep the lines of communication open.

2. Make Sure You Have Time Together

Life can be busy, both for you and your teen. However, you need to establish some regular times you and your teen spend time together to maintain a bond of closeness. This time spent together can help prevent distance from separating you and your teen and allow your teen the chance to ask questions or vent to you about things they are worried about.

3. Be Fair

Teens are inclined to think that everything is unfair. This is because they are being given more responsibility at home and school, leading to them thinking they know it all. This can be annoying as a parent, but you must remember that being punitive with your teen will likely drive them away. You want to be sure that you are being fair and understanding of your teen’s need to spread their wings and learn from their own mistakes.

Make sure you are not too hard on your teen for errors they are making while learning about life. You should also be sure that you allow chances for your teen to learn on their own, from their own mistakes. This is a big part of being fair to your teen about their choices and desires, and you will find that taking a bit of a hands-off approach can sometimes be the easiest way to parent fairly during your child’s teen years.
