Common Types of Therapy Offered At Military Boarding School

military boarding school troubled teenAre you looking to send your teen to a military boarding school? You may wonder what kind of therapies are typically offered in these facilities. Strictly speaking, a traditional military boarding school won’t typically offer therapeutic programs for the teens they care for. In these types of schools, teens will face a structured environment similar to what they would face in boot camp settings. That said, a boarding school that takes a different approach may offer your teen something different from his experience, including therapeutic programs that can help to meet his needs. What typical military boarding schools do not offer The idea of sending your teen to a military boarding school may seem like a good one, particularly if he’s been difficult to live with, is aggressive or violent, or is perhaps using and abusing drugs. The reality is that many military schools are selective and won’t admit teens struggling with certain issues, like mental or behavioral health concerns.  Here are a few things that most military schools won’t offer troubled teens. o   Therapy to help them build up their ability to cope with stressful situations. o   Behavioral modification programs to help troubled teens recognize how they can change their approach and behaviors. o   Life skills and leadership opportunities. o   Individual, family, and group therapy programs. Most military boarding schools offer programs that are designed to help prepare teens to pursue a life in the military. They typically aren’t the best solution for a troubled teen. What might a military boarding school offer to teens? Not all boarding schools are created the same, and not all programs will have the flexibility teens need when facing struggles. Some programs will provide the well-regulated environment that a teen needs and the structured environment that will help them thrive. This may look like a military school setting, but there will be some key differences in the approach of a facility like this. o   Teens will be offered the right type of therapeutic programs they need, offered by licensed and experienced therapists who understand what troubled teens need to recover. This therapy could include talk therapy, art therapy, adventure therapy, and so much more. o   Academic help that can help teens get caught back up with their schoolwork so that they have a better chance at graduating high school and going on to pursue higher education options. o   Recreational and outdoor activities that can prove to be just as much of a therapeutic program as can an individual or group session. o   Life skills, leadership skills, and so much more. In the right type of military-style boarding school, your teen will be able to focus on improving himself so that he returns home to become a pillar of society. The sooner you reach out to a facility that can help your teen, the sooner he’ll return on the right path to a bright and cheerful future. No parent truly wants to send their teen to live away from the family home. But if the situation with your teen has escalated to the point that you’re considering it, it’s a good idea to find a facility that will meet each of his needs. Even a teen who has been combative and argumentative with his family will benefit from the support of his family. If your teen is at a military boarding school, it’s important that you work with his therapists and other professionals caring for him so that he can benefit from the right type of support he needs. Family support can make a difference for a teen working hard to turn his life around.
